Core Competency Credit Course

Monday-Wednesday, September 22-24, 2008

This course has reached the enrollment limit for dentists. However, a dentist may request a place on the cancellation list for the 2008 course and receive priority notification for a future course offering by contacting the Office of Continuing Dental Education at 800-685-1418 or 612-625-1418.

The course is currently open for registration for physical therapists.

The area of TMD and orofacial pain is expanding and changing rapidly. Are you keeping up to date?

The area of TMD and orofacial pain has evolved in the past years to integrate many new strategies and techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. This continuously updated continuing dental education course will highlight these innovative approaches to patient management including: 1) new medications, 2) physical medicine techniques, 3) splint design and use, 4) behavioral methods, and 5) surgical procedures. You will be exposed to the latest assessment and treatment strategies that can be directly applied to your dental practice. The continuing dental education course size is limited to allow close interaction with a team of experts in the area of TMD and fellow course participants.

Through illustrated lectures, discussion, clinical demonstrations and actual patient assessment you will learn:

  • what causes orofacial pain, headaches and TM disorders.
  • which risk factors are associated with TM disorders.
  • how to examine patients for TMD and orofacial pain disorders.
  • how to determine treatment plans.
  • how to manage simple TMD cases.
  • when physical therapy, splint therapy and behavioral therapy are indicated.
  • why patients fail in treatment and how to maximize success.
  • how to identify patients that you can treat and patients that should be referred.

This popular continuing dental education course has continually received excellent reviews. Here are a few comments from past participants:

"I like the hands-on exam with real patients and the one-to-one interaction. Excellent continuing dental education program--well worth the fee."

"I enjoyed the format--learn, observe, do. Small group discussions were more meaningful."

"Very thorough continuing dental education program. Loved the dentist/physical therapist involvement and assessment. Very competent, knowledgeable faculty."

"Good balance of lecture and hands-on. Very comprehensive, but practical continuing dental education course--will immediately improve my patient care."

This continuing dental education course is under the direction of Eric L. Schiffman, D.D.S., M.S., Associate Professor and Director, Division of TMJ and Orofacial Pain, Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry; and the faculty of the TMJ and Orofacial Pain Clinic.
