Oral Appliances for the Treatment of Snoring & Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Core Competency Credit Course

Friday, September 12, 2008

Would you like to know when and how to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea in your dental office?

Sleep apnea is present in 24% of men and 9% of women ages 30 to 60, and the incidence of snoring is even greater. Recently new guidelines have been established for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliances. We are excited to bring to the University of Minnesota, Dr. Alan Lowe, a speaker recognized worldwide for his expertise in the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. His timely program will show you not only how to select among the 90 appliances available today, but also how to titrate appliances to achieve their maximum effectiveness with each patient. The entire dental team is invited to attend since all staff members will benefit from this practical information.

After this continuing dental education course you will understand how to:

  • implement a snoring/sleep apnea protocol in your dental office.
  • educate your patients about snoring and sleep apnea.
  • select among the diversity of oral appliances available today.
  • titrate an adjustable oral appliance.
  • identify which patients will benefit from oral appliance therapy.
  • interact with the attending physician or sleep specialist.
  • identify and record findings and prepare other paperwork including informed consent and insurance.

Alan Lowe, D.M.D., Ph.D., FRCD(C), FACD, FCDS(BC), Professor and Chair, Division of Orthodontics, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Lowe also maintains an orthodontic practice in Vancouver, Canada. His extensive research contributions on the use of oral appliances for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea and their effects on airway size and tongue muscle activity have been recognized worldwide. In addition, he holds Canadian, USA and worldwide independent patents for three technologies related to his research endeavors. Royalties for Klearway sales are paid to the University of British Columbia.
