Do you need to complete the educational training required by the Minnesota Board of Dentistry rules in order to administer nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation analgesia? Would you like a review and update on nitrous oxide sedation? Minnesota Board of Dentistry rules that went into effect on March 19, 2007, included a revision to the nitrous oxide training requirement. The new rule requires "12 hours of didactic instruction and the personal administration of at least three individual cases of analgesia, and supervised clinical experience using fail-safe anesthesia equipment capable of positive pressure respiration." This 12-hour training program is designed for: 1) dentists, dental hygienists and registered dental assistants who want to begin administering nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation sedation according to Minnesota requirements, as well as for 2) dentists and dental team members who are using nitrous oxide sedation but want an update on new equipment, techniques and precautions. During Friday's lecture sessions, you will learn about the: - basic components of nitrous oxide sedation equipment and their functions.
- advantages and disadvantages of nitrous oxide sedation.
- indications and contraindications of nitrous oxide sedation.
- pharmacology of agents used in nitrous oxide sedation.
- clinical uses of nitrous oxide sedation for adults and children.
- complications associated with nitrous oxide sedation and how to prevent, recognize and manage these complications.
- abuse potential, occupational hazards and other problematic effects of inhalation agents.
During the Saturday morning hands-on clinical session you will learn how to: - administer nitrous oxide inhalation sedation to patients in a clinical setting in a safe and effective manner. (Course participants will serve as each other's patients during the hands-on training portion of the program.)
