Local Anesthesia: A Hands-On Training Program

Core Competency Credit Course

Monday-Wednesday, May 12-14, 2008

DENTISTS: Would you like fewer interruptions during the day? Would you like your dental hygienists to help you with local anesthesia? Or, would you like more experience with the Gow-Gates injection technique?

DENTAL HYGIENISTS: Are your patients experiencing sensitivity during dental hygiene
treatment?

Administering local anesthesia allows dental hygienists to offer more comfortable care during periodontal debridement, root planing and other clinical services where root and gingival sensitivity are present. Dentists may also delegate to dental hygienists the responsibility of anesthetizing some of their restorative patients. This continuing dental education program will review basic knowledge of head and neck anatomy, pharmacology, and medical history evaluation relevant to local anesthesia. In addition, you will gain information and skill with the anesthetic agents and techniques as you practice injection techniques on each other.

Registration for Wednesday only is possible for dentists or dental hygienists who want to focus on any the following injections: 1) inferior alveolar block, 2) Gow-Gates block, 3) mental/incisive, 4) PDL, and 5) intraseptal techniques. This three-day program meets Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa requirements for training of dental hygienists in local anesthesia.

Through illustrated lectures and clinical experiences you will learn how to:

  • locate anatomic landmarks for each injection site.
  • select appropriate local anesthetic agents for each patient.
  • adjust your use of local anesthesia when medical contraindications or concerns are present.
  • prevent, recognize and manage complications associated with local anesthesia.
  • select and prepare the equipment needed.
  • provide comfortable and safe maxillary injections including: supraperiosteal, anterior superior alveolar (ASA), middle superior alveolar (MSA), posterior superior alveolar (PSA), nasopalatine (NP) and, greater palatine (GP).
  • provide comfortable and safe mandibular injections including: incisive/mental, inferior alveolar (IA) /lingual (Li) /buccal, Gow-Gates, PDL and Intraseptal.

This continuing dental education course is under the direction of Jeanne M. Anderson, R.D.H., B.S., Clinical Professor, Division of Dental Hygiene, Department of Primary Dental Care, School of Dentistry and the dental hygiene faculty of the Department of Primary Dental Care, School of Dentistry.
