Infection Control Update: How Well Are We Doing?

Core Competency Credit Course

Saturday, October 4, 2008

Do your infection control practices and procedures meet the most current guidelines and requirements? Are you looking for a continuing dental education course that will satisfy OSHA annual training requirements and the MN Board of Dentistry core competency requirement in infection control?

We are pleased to announce that Dr. John Molinari will be returning to the University of Minnesota to present an update on the CDC Guidelines for Infection Control in Dentistry. If you have heard Dr. Molinari speak you'll know that his vast knowledge of infectious diseases and infection control, together with his winning personality and practical teaching style, make for a fun and informative day. You will receive useful information on how to implement an effective, yet practical infection control program in your office. At the conclusion of this comprehensive continuing dental education seminar, you will have a better understanding of both the "why" and the "what" of the most recent guidelines.

The entire dental team will benefit from learning:

  • how to comply with the most current CDC, ADA, and Minnesota OSHA guidelines and recommendations.
  • which aseptic hand hygiene procedures are recommended components of an infection control program.
  • what are the occupational risks from bloodborne and respiratory infections.
  • how to manage occupation exposures to bloodborne pathogens--HBV, HCV, HIV.
  • which vaccines are currently recommended for health care workers.
  • how to incorporate evolving technologies and recommended procedures in the areas of instrument cleaning, packaging, sterilization, and storage.
  • which available products are most effective in environmental surface cleaning and disinfection procedures.
  • how to minimize the formation of biofilms and the potential risks associated with dental unit waterline contamination.
  • how to communicate appropriate infection control information to patients.

John A. Molinari, Ph.D., Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. Dr. Molinari has published over 300 scientific articles, text chapters and abstracts in the areas of Microbiology and Immunology, is a co-author of the text Practical Infection Control in Dentistry, and has lectured nationally and internationally on topics dealing with infectious diseases and dental asepsis. He also serves as a consultant to the ADA and the CDC in the areas of infectious disease and infection control. Dr. Molinari is Past Chairman of Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures (OSAP) and a present board member of the OSAP Foundation. Currently he is the Infection Control Section editor for The Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry, and has been a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of the American Dental Association.

Here are some comments about the program that Dr. Molinari presented at the U of MN in 2005:

"Dr. Molinari was outstanding. He made the program interesting and informative."

"Timely and important. I drove within the first tee at our golf course on the way here this morning and although the temptation was great, I'm glad that I came to this meeting. Good job, John!"

"This is not the first time that I've heard Dr. Molinari--he gets better every time! He's fantastic!"

The University of Minnesota gratefully acknowledges an unrestricted educational grant from Kerr TotalCare in support of this program.
