Office Oral Surgery: A Clinically Guided Participation Program

Core Competency Credit Course

Monday-Tuesday, October 27-28, 2008

This program is full for 2008. However, you may request a place on the cancellation list for the 2008 course and receive priority notification for a future course offering by contacting the Office of Continuing Dental Education at 800-685-1418 or 612-625-1418.

Would you like to become more confident with your oral surgical procedures? Would you like to work alongside an oral surgeon while performing surgical treatment?

This popular two-day continuing dental education course is offered to general dentists who would like to obtain clinical experience with the surgical removal of teeth as well as more complex oral surgical procedures. The course format includes illustrated lectures, live-video patient demonstrations and clinical participation that includes one-on-one instruction from a faculty member from the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. During the surgical demonstrations, video and two-way audio will enable you to consult with the oral and maxillofacial surgeon performing the surgical procedure. During the clinical session, participants may perform surgery under the direct guidance of an oral surgeon.

A team of oral surgeons will give you practical tips on:

  • surgical diagnosis and treatment planning
  • indications for treatment
  • surgical removal of impacted teeth
  • coding for third party reimbursement
  • informed consent and other legal issues
  • managing surgically induced pain
  • patient home care instructions
  • assessing surgical difficulty and risk
  • surgical removal of erupted teeth
  • indications for antibiotics and other medications
  • treating medically compromised patients
  • managing surgical complications

Participants will perform and/or observe one or more of the following procedures:

  • surgical removal of impacted third molars
  • preprosthetic surgery
  • biopsy of hard and soft tissue
  • surgical removal of erupted teeth
  • alveoloplasty

This continuing dental education course is under the direction of James Q. Swift, D.D.S., Professor and Director of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, and includes other faculty from the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
